Abiding in Christ (Bible Study)

 John 6:56

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.” —(NIV)

John 6:56 is one of the more challenging and deeply spiritual verses. On the surface, it can seem confusing—even offensive. But Jesus was revealing a powerful truth: true life, connection, and intimacy with Him come through deep spiritual union—symbolized through partaking in His body and blood. This verse invites us into a lasting, abiding relationship with Christ.

When Jesus says, “eat my flesh and drink my blood,” He’s not talking about physical cannibalism—He’s speaking spiritually and sacramentally. This language points forward to the Lord’s Supper (Communion), where bread and wine represent His broken body and shed blood.

To eat and drink of Jesus means to receive Him fully, to trust in His sacrifice, and to allow His life to nourish our own. It’s a picture of complete dependence.

Jesus uses the word “remain,” which is also translated “abide” in other versions. This implies a constant, ongoing relationship. Not a one-time decision, but a continual connection.

Remaining in Christ means:

  • Staying close to Him through prayer and the Word

  • Trusting Him daily

  • Letting His life shape yours

When we do this, He also remains in us—His Spirit lives within, guiding, comforting, and transforming.

This verse shows the mutual indwelling that comes with salvation. We are not merely following a set of teachings—we are entering into a relationship where Christ lives in us and we live in Him. His life becomes our life. His strength becomes our strength.

Just as food sustains physical life, Jesus sustains our spiritual life.

When we take Communion, we’re not just performing a ritual. We are remembering the sacrifice of Jesus and renewing our commitment to remain in Him. It’s a sacred reminder that our life flows from His death and resurrection.

John 6:56 points to the heart of the Christian life: a deep, lasting relationship with Jesus. As we continually receive from Him and remain in Him, we find true life—eternal, sustaining, and transforming. In Christ, we don’t just survive—we abide.
